Orderwise: What It Does Well, What It Doesn't

Orderwise is one of the most common ERP systems in UK decorated goods and workwear businesses. It's been around for decades, has a loyal user base, and is sold by a company that knows this sector well. It also has well-known gaps — and it comes with implementation risks that the sales process doesn't always make clear.

Being upfront: this isn't a comprehensive software review. It's a practitioner's view from working with decorated goods businesses that run Orderwise. I don't have a commercial relationship with Orderwise and I'm not recommending it or steering you away from it. I'm giving you the honest picture that helps you make a better decision.

What Orderwise Does Well

Stock management. Orderwise is genuinely good at stock. Multi-location inventory, stock transfers between locations, batch tracking, and reserve stock against orders all work well. For businesses managing garment stock across multiple size and colour combinations, this is a real strength.

Purchase order processing. The PO workflow in Orderwise is solid. Creating POs, matching goods received against them, three-way matching against supplier invoices — the process is reliable and well-supported. For businesses with high purchase order volumes, this matters.

Production scheduling and works orders. For businesses that manufacture or decorate to order, the works order functionality covers most of what's needed — routing, materials allocation, progress tracking. It's not the most modern interface, but it works.

Sector familiarity. Orderwise knows the decorated goods and workwear sector. The system handles the concept of decorating a blank garment, colour and size matrix ordering, and the B2B wholesale model. You won't spend time explaining your business model to the implementation team.

Where Orderwise Falls Short

B2B portal. The Orderwise B2B portal module exists, but it requires significant customisation to meet modern ecommerce expectations. Businesses that need a polished, fast, mobile-optimised B2B buying experience typically find they need either custom development on top of the Orderwise portal or a separate platform integrated to the ERP. That's an additional cost and complexity that isn't always made clear upfront.

Artwork management. Orderwise doesn't have native artwork management. Artwork files, proofing, version control, and the link between a specific artwork version and a specific order line aren't built in. Businesses fill this gap with shared folders, email attachments, or a separate tool — none of which is integrated with the ERP.

Reporting. The standard Orderwise reporting is functional but limited. Getting bespoke reports — margin by customer, production throughput by machine, sales by product category — typically requires the Orderwise Analytics add-on module, which is a separate cost. Without it, businesses build reports outside the system.

Modern integrations. Orderwise has an API and the company does integration work, but connecting to third-party tools — carrier management, supplier portals, marketing platforms — varies in quality. Some integrations are well-supported; others require custom development and ongoing maintenance.

The Implementation Reality

The thing nobody tells you about Orderwise implementations — or ERP implementations generally — is that they take longer and cost more than quoted. Not always dramatically so, but consistently so.

The main drivers are:

  • Data migration. Your existing data is rarely as clean as assumed. Customer records have duplicates, inconsistencies, and gaps. Product data is in formats that don't map cleanly to the new system. Data migration is almost always the longest part of an implementation and the one most often underestimated.
  • Process requirements that weren't defined upfront. The system is configured during implementation. If the requirements aren't fully defined before configuration starts, changes mid-project cause scope creep and additional cost.
  • Training and adoption. Orderwise is not an immediately intuitive system. The training time required for staff who aren't technically confident is higher than many implementations budget for.

None of this means the implementation will fail. It means that a realistic implementation budget is typically 30–50% above the quoted price, and a realistic timeline is 50–100% longer than the quoted timeline. Plan for that rather than being surprised by it.

Who Orderwise Is Right For

Orderwise works well for decorated goods and workwear businesses where: stock management complexity is high (many SKUs, multiple locations, high purchase order volume); production scheduling is needed; the business model is primarily B2B wholesale; and the B2B portal and artwork requirements are either modest or handled by a separate tool.

It's a harder fit for businesses where: ecommerce is a primary channel and the portal needs to compete with modern consumer expectations; real-time reporting and analytics are a commercial priority; or the integration requirements are broad and complex.

Quoted: 3–6 months. Reality for businesses with any complexity: 6–12 months. Budget 30–50% above the quoted price and plan the timeline accordingly. The surprises are almost always in data migration and scope changes.

What are the most common problems with Orderwise?

B2B portal requiring custom development, reporting needing the separate Analytics module, and implementation projects expanding because requirements weren't fully scoped beforehand. Plan for all three and none of them need to derail the project.

Choosing an ERP is a multi-year commitment. It deserves more than a demo and a sales deck.
